What is an Application Firewall?

An application firewall in an affiliate system is a firewall module restricting access to sensitive areas from hackers, bad crawlers or any other forbidden sources even if they have the correct login information. The system admin will be able to configure the firewall rules on a proactive basis and block unauthorized sources from accessing all or certain areas of the website.  

How is it different from a normal security module?

A normal security module restricts access on the basis of a user's session (login and password). However, an unauthorized user with the correct user login can access the system without any problem. An application firewall blocks entry  to a source blacklisted by the admin, to an unauthorized user who has the correct login information,  from a blocked source, or from someone trying to use a forbidden entry method.
