If you have a blog with a lot of readership, you may be interested in making some money through affiliate marketing programs. These programs present a very different way of monetizing your blog than does traditional advertising, so it takes a different mindset to fully realize the potential. One of the most important factors in your decision will be choosing the right program for your blog. There are pros and cons to engaging in affiliate marketing on blogs. You can make money from it, but usually only when a visitor actually purchases the promoted product or signs up for the promoted service. However, it doesn't normally cost you anything to try it. Again, the key to success is choosing the best and most relevant product or service to promote. There are literally hundreds of thousands of products and services that you can promote with affiliate programs on your blog. When you consider the array of products that Amazon has available (just one of many affiliate programs you can use) it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the choice. How do you make the decision what to promote? Here are a few things to consider:
Choosing Affiliate Programs: Relevancy Contextual Affiliate Products - one of the lessons you can learn by the major success of contextual advertising programs like Google's AdSense is that it is much easier to get people to take action when the ad or link for the product relates strongly to the context and content around it. This is called "relevancy." Search engines will not only give you more prominence if everything on your blog is relevant, but your conversion rate is very likely to increase as a result. When choosing which affiliate product and program to use on your blog, the first thing you need to think about is the topic that you're writing about. Ask yourself questions like: - What is my topic?
- What do people come to my blog looking for?
- What is the intent of my readers when they are on my blog?
- What types of products would my readers logically be interested in buying?
As you answer these questions, you will begin to get a feel for the type of affiliate programs that are right for you.
Choosing Affiliate Programs: Reputation Quality - Not all affiliate programs are made equal. There are many illegitimate and poor quality programs out there. Your choice of affiliate programs is vital not only to your success, but to your reputation. When looking at options, ask yourself, "What impact will promoting this product have on my blog's reputation?" Whatever you promote on your blog will say something to your readers about who you are. If you link to and promote a low quality item, it could have a very strong negative effect on your site. Again, ask yourself questions like: - Are the products I am considering to link to quality products?
- Is the merchant site cheap and nasty, or is it a well-designed and pleasant site to visit?
- How should I relate to the link on my blog? Should I recommend it?
- Are the programs behind the products well-known brands? Are they trusted? (Amazon is a good example of a well-known, trusted brand.)
Choosing Affiliate Programs: Location, Location, Location An important factor to keep in mind when choosing an affiliate program is the geographic area of your readership. Is it local, national, or international? You don't want to promote a product that has little relevancy and/or reach to your online audience. Again, Amazon provides a good example of this. They do not ship electronics internationally, so if you have a gadget blog with a readership in Australia, you wouldn't want Amazon as your affiliate program. In a case like this, it would be more worth your time and effort to identify localized affiliate programs.
Choosing Affiliate Programs: Tangible Products vs. Services One last thing to consider is whether you want to promote tangible goods or services (like e-books or e-newsletters). If you have a blog that can readily adapt to seasonal interests, you may make more money by promoting products that do great during certain seasons. If you don't, then promoting services of the affiliate program merchant could do just as well for you. Whatever affiliate program you choose, be sure to answer the questions posed above before you make a commitment. Then, if you thoroughly research the pertinent programs, your chances of success will increase dramatically. |
